Historically the dominant condition in Russia has been occupied by Russian culture, Russian language culture, and Russian nationality. This is partly because Russians make up the majority of the country's population and because many times in Russian history, cultures of other nationalities were integrated into Russian culture through Russification.
The first eastern Slavic state was the Rus (or principality) of Kiev, which adopted Christianity due to the important influence of the Byzantine Empire in 988, thus beginning the fusion between Slavic and Byzantine cultures that would characterize the Russian one during the following seven centuries. The Rus of Kiev would eventually disintegrate into several kingdoms that would compete with each other for being heirs to their civilization and for territorial dominance in the area, and which ended up under Mongol rule. before russia was formed the soviet union was in a cold war
